Discover Catalonia, discover the world
The History Museum of Catalonia has become established as a leading institution popularising our collective historical and culture heritage. The permanent exhibition offers an attractive, interactive story of the history of Catalonia from earliest times to the present day, complemented with educational and cultural activities, conservation projects, workshops and temporary exhibitions. Our intention is to be a cultural centre that is open and accessible to everyone and we want our visitors to have the chance to learn about, debate and enjoy all aspects of history.
History of the museum
The History Museum of Catalonia opened its doors in February 1996. Unlike other museums, it was not the result of a need to display an existing collection but rather the desire to become a leading centre for popularising our collective history and heritage.

Mission and strategy
A museum is, essentially, an instrument to help preserve the collective memory of a society. The History Museum of Catalonia is also intended to be a space open to everyone so that people can meet, debate and reflect.
The museum building
The Palau de Mar it is in fact the only surviving construction from the old industrial port of Barcelona. The building were designed in 1881 by the engineer Maurici Garrán, who was inspired by English port buildings of the period.
